Nigeria Dismissed Tax Evasion Charges Against Binance.webp.webp

Binance executive’s family has shared a concerning update on the deteriorating health condition of Tigran Gambaryan, who remains detained in Nigeria. Gambaryan, a former U.S. federal agent and current Binance employee, has been held in Kuje Prison since February 26, 2024, following his arrest by Nigeria authorities.

Binance Executive’s Family Shares Health Update

According to an exclusive email shared with CoinGape, Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan’s health has significantly declined during his six-month detention. He is currently bedridden and unable to walk due to a herniated disc that has been left untreated.

The family reports that he has been denied appropriate medical care and access to a wheelchair, leaving him in severe pain. His condition has worsened to the point that he is now taking blood thinners to prevent clots, with prison doctors noting muscle atrophy due to his immobility.

Gambaryan has also suffered from recurrent health issues, including malaria and pneumonia, further complicating his already fragile state. His family has expressed deep concern over the lack of medical attention and is urgently calling for his release before irreversible damage occurs.

Legal and Consular Access Severely Restricted

Significant restrictions on Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan’s legal and consular access have exacerbated the situation. From July 26 to August 14, his legal team was barred from visiting him, making it impossible for them to adequately prepare for his upcoming trial.

Although a brief visit was allowed on August 15, further access has since been denied. This restriction violates the Nigerian Constitution and has raised serious concerns about the fairness of the legal process.

Additionally, the U.S. Embassy has lost access to Gambaryan because he cannot physically reach the visitor area without a wheelchair. This lack of access has hindered both legal representation and consular support, further complicating the situation as his trial date approaches.

Family Plea for Release

Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan’s wife, Yuki, has made a public plea for his release, citing the severe emotional and physical toll the detention has taken on their family. She highlighted that her husband has missed significant family milestones, including their son’s 5th birthday and their 15th wedding anniversary, all while his health continues to deteriorate.

Yuki’s video plea emphasizes the urgent need for medical treatment to prevent permanent damage, expressing fears that the conditions of his detention could have long-lasting consequences. The family continues to appeal to the Nigerian government and the international community to secure his release.

While the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in Nigeria has dropped tax evasion charges against Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan, he remains detained due to ongoing money laundering charges. The next hearing in his case is scheduled for September 2, 2024, during which his legal team hopes to secure his release amid Nigeria’s crypto regulation growth.
